The Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF) is responsible for: 1. The protection of 15 million acres of forest land from forest fire, insects and disease; 2. Management of 14 State Forests and other state lands totaling about 50,000 acres for timber, recreation, water, research, wildlife and biodiversity; and 3. Providing professional forestry advice and technical management assistance for non-industrial private forest landowners through a variety of programs.

Healing Harvest Forest Foundation works to develop, implement and support community-based sustainable forestry initiatives, through the widespread use of animal-powered extraction of logs (horse, mule, oxen logging) and "worst first" selection of individual trees in timber harvesting.

Appalachian Sustainable Development is a not-for-profit organization working in 10 counties of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee seeking to improve the quality of forest practices on private lands and to encourage local processing of forest resources in order to add value and create jobs. Their Sustainable Forestry and Wood Products Program provides outreach, education, and technical assistance for the conservation and sustainable use of private forests; operates a solar and wood waste-powered dry kiln; sells Sustainable Woods (TM) lumber to regional manufacturers; and promotes the market for sustainably-produced forest products.
