The Accokeek Foundation was established in 1957 to preserve the land directly across the Potomac River from George Washington's Mount Vernon. The Foundation, an educational non-profit organization, practices and teaches land stewardship and sustainable use of natural resources, and interprets the natural and cultural resources of the Tidewater Potomac.

Since 1982, the Appalachian Trail Conference Land Trust has helped federal agencies acquire land for the 1,000-foot wide Trail "corridor" called for by the National Trails System Act of 1968. Now that this corridor is largely completed, the Land Trust works to further protect the Trail experience by protecting features of the surrounding environment.
