Forest Legacy Program (FLP):
The United States Forest Service developed the FLP to assist states and
private landowners in using conservation easements to protect private forest
lands from future development and deforestation. Currently 22 states are
participating in the program and have completed their Assessment of Need (AON).
Only three states in the South have gotten this far, Tennessee, North Carolina and South
Carolina; although both Georgia and Alabama have begun the process. Forest
Legacy assures that both traditional uses of private forestlands and the public
values of America's forests are protected for future generations.
