SOUTHERN FORESTS NETWORK ASSOCIATE POSITIONS

SFN offers several associate positions for volunteers and student interns.

RESEARCH ASSOCIATES

Research Associate projects consist of data compilation and analysis, literature review, and policy analysis to produce recommendations on critical issues in sustainable forestry, such as:

  1. Ecological & Socioeconomic Impacts of Forest-based Biofuels Development
  2. Forest Ecosystem Service Markets: Carbon and Watershed Protection
  3. Invasive Species Management
  4. Regional Landscape Analysis to Identify Forest Conservation Priorities (GIS skills required)

EXTENSION ASSOCIATES

Extension associates will develop information, resources, and tools to assist SFN staff in delivering extension services to forest landowners, forestry professionals, and forest-based businesses. Focus areas include:

  1. Development of a new Forest Health Monitoring toolkit and protocols
  2. Certification standards for non-timber forest products
  3. Resources for underserved landowners and business owners
  4. Engaging the next generation of forestland owners
  5. Delivery of Forest Stewardship Council certification through SFN’s Group Certification Program

MARKETING ASSOCIATES

Marketing associates will provide support for ongoing marketing efforts including:

  1. Local and regional market analysis
  2. Branding and message development to promote SFN programs and certified forest products
  3. Outreach to landowners, forestry professionals, and forest-based businesses
  4. Outreach to buyers and consumers

OTHER OPPORTUNITIES

SFN is happy to entertain other project proposals directly related to our goals. Associate positions are unpaid positions but the SFN staff is available to work with interested candidates willing to independently seek funding to support paid positions.

QUALIFICATIONS

SFN is seeking candidates with a background in a relevant natural resources field, with a preference for those specializing in forest management, forest ecology, forest economics/business, and marketing. Must be prepared to work independently from a home office.
